چکیده

Prior studies of human locomotion under simulated partial gravity have hypothesized that energy expenditure is increased in lunar gravity, as compared to that of Mars. This may be due to subjects having to expend excess energy for stability and posture control in the lower gravitational field. The physiological cause of this suspected ‘‘wasted energy’’ during locomotion in low gravity remains to be determined. This paper outlines factors to be considered for these analyses and enhancements to the simulation method that will enable assessment of inertial stability and associated metabolic cost. A novel simulation technique is proposed for assessing the effects of inertial rotation and variable mass on stability, metabolic cost, and biomechanics using a modified weight relief harness to simulate partial

Neural Network Meta-Modeling of Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage Oil Recovery Processes

Production of highly viscous tar sand bitumen using Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) with a pair of horizontal wells has advantages over conventional steam flooding. This paper explores the use of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) as an alternative to the traditional SAGD simulation approach. Feed forward, multi-layered neural network meta-models are trained through the Back-...

Design and Utility Assessment of Attitude Control Systems for EVA Task Performance

Low gravity astronaut extravehicular activity (EVA) missions using a maneuvering Jetpack and robotic servicing and assembly missions could benefit from spacecraft systems capable of maintaining pointing stability during critical operations. The addition of single-gimbal control moment gyroscopes (CMGs) to the attitude control system of these spacecraft could substantially improve the stability ...

INSPECT Sensor Suite for On-Orbit Inspection and Characterization with Extravehicular Activity Spacecraft

Most inspection and maintenance operations at the International Space Station (ISS) rely on astronaut extravehicular activities (EVAs). Autonomous or radio-controlled spacecraft that work in conjunction with astronauts could improve diagnostic and imaging capability during EVA missions. The Integrated Navigation Sensor Platform for EVA Control and Testing (INSPECT) system is a proposed testbed ...

RELIABILITY–BASED DESIGN OPTIMIZATION OF CONCRETE GRAVITY DAMS USING SUBSET SIMULATION

The paper deals with the reliability–based design optimization (RBDO) of concrete gravity dams subjected to earthquake load using subset simulation. The optimization problem is formulated such that the optimal shape of concrete gravity dam described by a number of variables is found by minimizing the total cost of concrete gravity dam for the given target reliability. In order to achieve this p...
